Dr Catherine Mathews

Consultant Rheumatologist

I am a senior consultant physician and hospital director with over 20 years’ specialist experience diagnosing and treating the full range of musculoskeletal conditions that  can affect both adults and children.  I am also expert in the diagnosis and multidisciplinary care of chronic pain, post viral illness and fibromyalgia.  My practice is based at The Blackheath Hospital.

Common Rheumatological Conditions

Rheumatology is the specialist diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.  These conditions can be mechanical or autoimmune and inflammatory in nature, and affect any age group.  There are many treatment pathways that I can provide involving specialist multidisciplinary professional teams.

Arthritis

A commonly misunderstood auto-immune disease affecting all ages.

Gout

Episodic bouts of gout can be debilitating but there are many treatment options.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness at specific tender points, often accompanied by sleep disturbances and cognitive difficulties, with no clear underlying inflammation or joint damage.

Hypermobility

Hypermobility, often associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders, is a condition characterized by an excessive range of joint motion due to laxity of connective tissues, potentially leading to joint pain, instability, and a range of associated symptoms.

At the Blackheath Hospital we have access to the most modern scanning and diagnostic techniques.
